Greetings you Thinkers,

You know how I do the "monthly recaps"? Reviewing the month, seeing what stands out, what I did, what I said, themes and thoughts, and then I put all of that into one write, one email. Well I did that for running with turtles and slowing down this morning because I think that topic has come to a head. I think it's time to actually do it. I think I am starting a Challenge to slow down and I think I'm starting it today. Maybe I started yesterday.

Am I thinking it or am I doing it?

(See me noticing my own language right there!)

The review of slowing down:

I did what I do and I collected what was already there, to organize it and see. Then to choose things for my now.

In this case, I looked to see what I could find about slowing down. When did I start saying that? When did I start feeling that? What did I say? That I even did this WAS slowing down.

This is what I found and I found it interesting.

And I think I found the very first reference of it:

D123: running with turtles

That was 5 MONTHS AGO, May 8th:

I said a few days ago that life is going fast. I am going fast. And I may be missing things. I saw a meme that said something about running with turtles and I put it down as something to go back to. The way I do that.

Seeing now, that my tendency to go back to things, is evidence of not going "slow enough" in the first place?

What I actually put down in my notebook - "I think I wouldn't mind running with turtles for awhile."
...but then I thought, is that true? DO I want to slow down? If that's what running with turtles even means?
If I did want to go slower, isn't that what I would be doing?

In the next’s day’s email the theme continued when I wrote about feelings I had about my Dad on going to someone else’s wedding - "because we are all only human and we are all always missing stuff and thinking about how we could be more present, or more slow."

Thanks to digging around further I also found

what my Mom said to this topic at the time:

Thinking I might print this out and carry it around with me while I do this Challenge. What slowing down means to my Mom. Maybe you'll write what slowing down means to you.

"I think “ running with turtles” is a great phrase-maybe one to inspire. To me “running with turtles “means to slow down to a pace to look at-breathe in-maybe enjoy all the things in the moment, the day, the week. Sometimes we zoom-go so fast and get the ooh aah feelings, or isn’t that pretty thought or I like this- but dont take the time to TRULY notice or feel or BE in the moment Life can get so fast paced and there is so much that “ needs” to be done we just keep moving at that pace.."

Another readers's note from 5 months ago writing about this:

“maybe running with the turtles has something to offer? Even if only for a short time. Maybe turtles themselves have something to say and the only way to hear them is to run at their pace?”

still on the topic 5 days later.

D128: the part of life that only happens in kitchens in the mornings

remember this?

"There's a part of life that only happens in kitchens

in the mornings

before anyone decides what they're doing for the day

The sunlight is only starting to come in

perhaps there's a beam you know

and you place your face in it

Crumbs from yesterday sprinkle the counter

dishes from last night sit in the sink and you like to do them in this kitchen morning time.

You stand there in your slippers or barefeet depending on the time of year or how clean the floor is,

and there's a moment of figuring out which version of your life you're going to take today.

What today, what today, what today - is decided in mornings,

usually in the kitchen.

20 days later

D149 I was still in it. Noticing a road sign that said slow down and got annoyed by it, but still I said :

I seem to be in a season of noticing a want,
a want to slow down
and not doing it.

And then it seemed to drop off. The words and sentiment tapered off per the word search of my emails “slow down”. No other mentions after D149. Did I forget about it? Did it naturally happen and therefore became a less conscious thing. No I don't think it was that.

And today I am thinking and saying, maybe it's really time.

Thinking about starting a Slow Down Challenge today. Is it ironic that I would do a CHALLENGE about "relaxing"?

What else

Took Duck to the vet yesterday. Got some expensive test and results we are waiting on. Still in the land of possible virus or infection which will be treatable with meds, assuming that is what it is, determined by these tests.

Thinking less about hate and more about what to do with it. (Use hate for good.) And mostly focusing on SLOWING DOWN now. How to incorporate that into my life.

What about you?

Where does "slowing down" fit into your life right now?

Yesterday I left off with: "the idea of doing a Kymology Challenge anytime soon feels impossible. Adding anything else to my plate right now feels potentially insurmountable.." and today I think I'm starting off with doing it.

What does this have to do with you today?

word of the day

some words to consider for the overall IDEA of what "slow down" is meant to mean

unhurried — proceeding without haste
languor — a pleasant or dreamy lack of energy, sometimes almost luxurious
repose — a state of rest, tranquility, or stillness
leisure — freedom from the demands of work or obligation
respite — a temporary interval of relief from something difficult or demanding
deceleration — literally a reduction in speed, but good metaphorically
deliberate — intentional and considered rather than hurried
meander — to follow a winding course rather than the shortest route
loll — to sit, lie, or move in a relaxed, lazy way
idleness — inactivity, usually criticized, which makes it interesting to reclaim
equanimity — mental calmness and steadiness, particularly amid difficulty

quote(s) to consider

Hurry has a way of inventing importance.

I love a good double meaning, just like I love a double negative!

a theme of character: Kym has a tendency of disdain for certain words. ( I should make that list.)
(STARTING THAT LIST: vacation, deserve, hope, need)
defining and qualifying are usually why words end up on this list.

Sunrises are Mom. Sunsets are Dad.

disdain for vaguity. vague is not nice

I'm a horror to say anything to some times

Mismatched shoes is a me thing; it is not a mistake I walked out the door with.

Watching a dog run on the beach is one of the purest sights of happiness I know.

I was not a whiskey drinker. I don't know when I become a whiskey drinker. I have hated whiskey and all dark liquor all my life. Now I drink old fashioneds. Who have I become?

You will often find me "wrapping my head around that good thought"

vague. I don't like vague. don't be vague with me, I won't be vague with you. at least not on purpose.

Everything is a choice and authenticity is supreme.

Reflecting on my life whether it's looking back at the last month or doing a "this time last year" thing, shorter or longer time frames, doing this at all is a reflection of who I am. That I care to consider who I am, who I have been, what I have done, so that I may use all of that to inform what I do and who I am in the present and the future. That I reflect is a reflection of who I am.

I love a good double negative!

Plan in quotes because I'm so averse to "plans" and "goals".

I chunk out my days, to the minute, in Gcal.

I love to putter so if it becomes "I puttered my life away" so be it.

I'm not a cherry picker, of anything. I like to use things that exist rather than start from new or scratch.

I am an ostrich about politics, news, current events, pop culture and media.

I dislike clichés and most positive quotes, under thought things meant well, commonly said quotes and phrases.

Don't tell me what to do, don't ask me "how how are you?" or say "I'm sorry for your loss" unless you want to annoy me or you really, really mean it. And know it can be hard to tell which it is, and I'm wrong not infrequently.

30 Day Challenges are my thing. I have a tendency to make things every day things. This is where 30 Day Challenges come from!

Like yourself. Know yourself. Express that self.
Think about things. Don't feel like you have to dance in the rain to have a good life.
Don't have a plan. Stand for what matters. Read when you want to. Don't smile when people tell you to.
Don't have goal. Tend plants. Leave marks. Do what you say. Change YOUR world. And your mind!
Be a friend and a daughter and a partner and a sister and a dog mom.
In a world full of "accept who you are" messages, don't forget to be a "work on that" kind of person.
Don't put kindness above truth. Try new things. Be honest. Live by ideals. Have some whimsy.
What you do for money matters; strive to like what you do for money. (job)
If you have a hobby you need a life.
Use what attracts you and let what you care about matter!

I never need to talk but thank you for offering to listen.

If you say I'm overthinking it, I'll probably say you are underthinkig it.

why I do what I do: I want to "make you" THINK. I don't mind if your experience and perception of me "makes you" be more mindful, use your brain more, "think too much" or consider something more carefully, or differently, or moves you to be (more) thoughtful or intentional or authentic.

I am a hugger and I mean my hugs.

I don't like to have scheduled things. The days where I have something scheduled are a certain category of feeling. I'm not very fond of pre sign ups, committing to things in advance externally. My favorite days are the ones I call "blank slate days". Nothing scheduled, nothing formally EXTERNALLY committed (I am full of internal commitment and ideas all the time, so no day is truly uncommitted).

I like a cup to fill.

So which is it Kym. Do you like wide open clean slate no commitment things?
Or you "need" want and thrive in containers, defined spaces, rules and limits?

Geez what a walking contradiction. A biggest when to which Witch!?
