A typo led me to this
comeuppance

what to DO when someone is struggling?

Friday October 23, 2026
8:22 AM

Greetings Thinkers,

Life is good.

Of the list I put here yesterday, I forgot the common one of - LIFE IS GOOD. That is one too right?

See how I was affected by what I was thinking and what I was able to comeuppance with.

A typo led me to: comeuppance. I was typing "come up with" and it auto corrected to comeuppance. Is that a word?!

Life is precious

Life is short

Life is hard

Life is unfair

Life is cruel

life is good

or is it - god is great and god is good?

No Google confirms it. On typing it in, the first auto fill is

Also, the last is - LIFE IS A TV SHOW.

what to DO when someone is suffering ...

I'm still thinking about the something awful that isn't mine. My friend's wife died.

And all the (human) dynamics of that.

I want to do something. I want to be there for him. I don't know what to say, I don't know what to do.

When my Dad died, I was hard on people about what they said and did. I wasn't trying to be hard about it, but what I felt about it was not great. It was that what people were saying or not saying is not what I felt I needed, liked, or wanted. I was hard on the cliche phrases like "sorry for your loss", "here if you need to talk", "prayers for you and your family" and so on. I wanted real, deep, meaningful stuff and this did not feel that.

But as this experience went on and once I found myself on the OTHER side of it, AFTER also experiencing being on the receiving side of it, I was humbled and changed. I understood why that stuff got said. It's because people REALLY don't know what to say or do.

It's like "how are you?". Sometimes that's a real and deep and mean it question; sometimes that's a line that falls out of someone's mouth or fingers when they have NO interest or time to hear any real answer. It's a thing of our world that the exact same words can mean wildly different and opposite things. It's up to you to decide what words mean, all the time, all the time.

And it's not just the words, and knowing what to say, it's knowing what to do, too! It's this deep hurt of a want to DO SOMETHING when someone is suffering, when you THINK someone is suffering. If we care we want to DO. And that's where the "let me know if you need anything" stuff comes from.

But most of us have been on the side of getting those offers, whether the hard thing is unbearable like death or the kind of brutal like moving pumpkins. The same way "how are you" goes in wide places, so does "let me know if you need anything". Do you need something to eat or do you need help destroying evidence?

Sometimes we have no idea what we need and what we really need is for someone to just do something. Someone else to figure out or guess at what we need and just do it. But this runs wild risk too. What if you DO something and it's not good, not wanted, and now you've made it worse or incredibly awkward. That's what we on the side of not directly affected, fear. We want to do something but we don't want to make it worse. If I show up with a bucket and a mop to clean your house, and deliver beer and pizza are you like thank god or WTF? It could definitely go either way..

And then there's the matter of how close you are to someone. That affects what you think you know and what you think you can do. If it was my best friend from now's spouse, would I know better or less what to do? In some ways it might be easier, in others it would probably be even harder.

in the case right now, this is a person from my past who is not not in my present but we aren't close. We are close in the way that I can feel "close" to people who I haven't talked to in years. I feel close to my high school best friend because he is a person who knew me when I was 10 and I will love him forever. But the truth and reality is that I don't really know him as an adult. We didn't "keep in touch" in a close way. And I feel I have no idea what he needs right now.
Or do I?

Whatever it all is, that is always some kind of complicated, I have been obsessing about "what to do" since I took in the news 2 nights ago. So far I have texted him and been thinking about him and his family non stop. Imagining my own life it was affected in a way like his is now. It's awful. And I know I'm not even able to imagine it.

still chewing on:

Death is brutal, moving pumpkins is not.

A reminder to be careful with your words.

What else?

I'm thinking about doing an AUDIO version of the email. I have been asked for this before and it is coming up again. Maybe I will do it.

I am also thinking of the End Of Year Challenge. This would be the third annual. But it's coming up fast because that starts 30+30 days from the end of the year and if I'm going to do it, I gotta get the word out soon.

The Counts:

The Daily Email count: Day 291

14 days until Joe's 30th birthday!

The End Of Year Challenge count is coming soon!

Itinerary for today:

  • deliver pumpkins
  • help someone decorate for a celebration
  • slow down for something

What does this have to do with you today?

standouts / other thoughts

word of the day

comeuppance: deserved punishment, consequence, or reversal of fortune, especially one that feels satisfyingly overdue. What happens when someone's arrogance, dishonesty, cruelty, or foolishness finally catches up with them.

The word originated in American English in the 19th century, from the expression “come up”, in the sense of being called to account or brought before someone for judgment.

suffering: because if someone is suffering or we THINK they are, are 2 different things.
the experience of physical pain, emotional distress, hardship, or anguish; the state of enduring something painful, unpleasant, or difficult.

quote(s) to consider

The last day will look remarkably like a day.

Death has never been called late.

Things you could know about me:

take this out and make it a blog post on the website

order: newest adds at the top, older things at the bottom

Balance is a word Kymology dislikes, so now I'm bristling. But I can bristle and still get the point.

sometimes you can tell the kind of day I'm having by the status of my console:

Waking up so early it's still dark reminds me of my Dad.

I am a sucker (which means a lover) for good one liners.

perhaps my favorite quote / rule : never ask people about your work

Who is Fancy?

Fancy is the name of my car. When I got the new car this year, I named her. The first car I have ever named. And while she is very dirty and broken in at this point, she is still so Fancy!

Going to an airport solo used to be what made me feel bad ass, now going to a live auction by myself does. Being a buyer who loads up a truck makes me feel baddy. What I feel in the 2026 year of life.

One of my favorite things is to get a message from someone that details a dream they had, that I was in. The kind of intimacy that takes.

I don't eat the vegetables right away. I buy things and then save them for later until they go bad. Goes for fruit too. I just buy and eat less fruit than vegetables .

(diamond as a shape is essentially 2 triangles you know)

Kym fact - I rarely wash my face. Definitely not an end of day or beginning of day skin care face thing person.

some plurals I don't spell right: leafs, lifes,

I don't have a lot of committed organization of my time. Every day is different and I decide what it is. AKA no 9-5 or anything like it or regular.

I love a good double meaning, just like I love a double negative!

a theme of character: Kym has a tendency of disdain for certain words. ( I should make that list.)
(STARTING THAT LIST: vacation, deserve, hope, need)
defining and qualifying are usually why words end up on this list.

Sunrises are Mom. Sunsets are Dad.

true crime podcasts affect my outlook on life

disdain for vaguity. vague is not nice

I'm a horror to say anything to some times

Mismatched shoes is a me thing; it is not a mistake I walked out the door with.

Watching a dog run on the beach is one of the purest sights of happiness I know.

I was not a whiskey drinker. I don't know when I become a whiskey drinker. I have hated whiskey and all dark liquor all my life. Now I drink old fashioneds. Who have I become?

You will often find me "wrapping my head around that good thought"

vague. I don't like vague. don't be vague with me, I won't be vague with you. at least not on purpose.

defines WEIGHT as: the quality of the quantity of matter you are carrying

I like to antagonize common sayings and typical perspectives

Everything is a choice and authenticity is supreme.

Reflecting on my life whether it's looking back at the last month or doing a "this time last year" thing, shorter or longer time frames, doing this at all is a reflection of who I am. That I care to consider who I am, who I have been, what I have done, so that I may use all of that to inform what I do and who I am in the present and the future. That I reflect is a reflection of who I am.

running with turtles

I know, I'm a horror to say anything to some times..

when all my identities are umbrellas

I love a good double negative!

Plan in quotes because I'm so averse to "plans" and "goals".

I chunk out my days, to the minute, in Gcal.

I love to putter so if it becomes "I puttered my life away" so be it.

I'm not a cherry picker, of anything. I like to use things that exist rather than start from new or scratch.

I am an ostrich about politics, news, current events, pop culture and media.

I dislike clichés and most positive quotes, under thought things meant well, commonly said quotes and phrases.

Don't tell me what to do, don't ask me "how how are you?" or say "I'm sorry for your loss" unless you want to annoy me or you really, really mean it. And know it can be hard to tell which it is, and I'm wrong not infrequently.

30 Day Challenges are my thing. I have a tendency to make things every day things. This is where 30 Day Challenges come from!

Like yourself. Know yourself. Express that self.
Think about things. Don't feel like you have to dance in the rain to have a good life.
Don't have a plan. Stand for what matters. Read when you want to. Don't smile when people tell you to.
Don't have goal. Tend plants. Leave marks. Do what you say. Change YOUR world. And your mind!
Be a friend and a daughter and a partner and a sister and a dog mom.
In a world full of "accept who you are" messages, don't forget to be a "work on that" kind of person.
Don't put kindness above truth. Try new things. Be honest. Live by ideals. Have some whimsy.
What you do for money matters; strive to like what you do for money. (job)
If you have a hobby you need a life.
Use what attracts you and let what you care about matter!

Peepers are my favorite sound.

Triangles are my favorite shape.

54 is my number.

I never need to talk but thank you for offering to listen.

If you say I'm overthinking it, I'll probably say you are underthinkig it.

why I do what I do: I want to "make you" THINK. I don't mind if your experience and perception of me "makes you" be more mindful, use your brain more, "think too much" or consider something more carefully, or differently, or moves you to be (more) thoughtful or intentional or authentic.

I am a hugger and I mean my hugs.

I don't like to have scheduled things. The days where I have something scheduled are a certain category of feeling. I'm not very fond of pre sign ups, committing to things in advance externally. My favorite days are the ones I call "blank slate days". Nothing scheduled, nothing formally EXTERNALLY committed (I am full of internal commitment and ideas all the time, so no day is truly uncommitted).

use the moons

I love rules and I am a ruler follower.

I like a cup to fill.

So which is it Kym. Do you like wide open clean slate no commitment things?
Or you "need" want and thrive in containers, defined spaces, rules and limits?

Geez what a walking contradiction. A biggest when to which Witch!?

SOC life - what you allow in, turns into what you spend your time on. Can you see it?

Tomb raider hot is my favorite kind of girl hot, my favorite hot to be.
